As the summer sun sets over Cape Town, the enchanting Maynardville Open-Air Festival has once again transformed the lush surroundings of Maynardville Park into a stage of imagination and artistry, casting its spell on audiences with the captivating theme, waves of wonder. Running from 31 January until 8 March 2025, this year’s highlight is Shakespeare’s masterful play The Tempest, which tells a tale of romance, illusion, and revenge.
Under the astute direction of Sylvaine Strike, the iconic story has been reimagined with an empowering twist—Prospero, traditionally portrayed as a male character, is brought to life by the formidable Antoinette Kellermann as Prospera. Her performance promises to be a powerful depiction of a sorceress trapped by time and circumstance. Alongside her, Albert Pretorius steps into the shoes of the enigmatic Caliban, caught in a web of enslavement and revenge.
The plot thickens as Prospera conjures a ferocious storm designed to shipwreck those who betrayed her: her treacherous brother Antonio (played by David Viviers) and King Alonso of Naples, played by Brent Palmer. Marooned on a mystical island, they serve as pawns in Prospera's meticulously crafted scheme to restore her daughter Miranda's honour and reclaim her lost dukedom. Miranda, portrayed by Jane de Wet, is blissfully unaware of the machinations guiding her as she falls for the dashing Ferdinand (Jefferson Lan), son of King Alonso. This tragic romance is accentuated by the ethereal presence of Ariel, enacted by Daniel Lasker, whose spirit weaves an enchanting tapestry of magic throughout the narrative.
The production's artistic vision extends beyond the performances. Set and costume design, crafted by Niall Griffin, promises a visually stunning backdrop, complemented by Oliver Hauser’s evocative lighting and Wessel Odendaal’s original score. This dreamlike creation brings Shakespeare’s timeless tale to life, showcasing VR Theatrical’s commitment to extraordinary theatre.
The festival isn't just about theatre; it offers a sensory feast for all. Patrons can indulge in a delightful array of food options while enjoying a scenic picnic beneath the stars, encapsulated by the sounds of nature and nightly performances. "It’s about creating a communal experience," expressed Rauen Venter, Head of Innovation and Strategic Partnerships, highlighting the festival's efforts toward social innovation and sustainability.
Adding to the allure of the festival, special Sunday evening concerts enrich the cultural experience. Cape Town Opera will grace the festival on 9 February 2025, featuring an impressive programme of extracts from Shakespeare-themed operas, performed by outstanding soloists and accompanied by Jan Hugo. Later, on 16 and 23 February, the highly anticipated 'Sunday in the Park with Sondheim' concerts will celebrate the iconic composer's 95th birthday, featuring famed performer Jonathan Roxmouth, adding another layer of excitement to the season.
With tickets for these events selling quickly last year, audiences are encouraged to book early to avoid disappointment. The sublime stage setting, the array of culinary offerings, and a stellar cast ensure that the Maynardville Open-Air Festival is poised to be a highlight of the 2025 theatre calendar.
This festival is not merely a form of entertainment but a celebration of community, creativity, and cultural heritage. As Jaco van Rensburg, Executive Producer of VR Theatrical, remarked, “A creative storm is brewing for Maynardville this year. We look forward to enchanting audiences new and old.” The 2025 season promises to be an unforgettable exploration of classic theatre, inspiring future generations.
