Two men, one of whom is a police officer, are expected to appear in court today for the alleged assault of a Phoenix security boss.

Brandon Pillay, 31, of Sealen Security is in a critical condition in hospital after he was allegedly assaulted outside a sports bar in Starwood on Sunday morning.

Gareth Naidoo, the spokesperson for KZN VIP Protection Services, said according to reports, a fight broke out inside the bar, where one of Pillay's security officers was initially assaulted.

“Unaware of the danger, Pillay walked up the stairs where he was viciously attacked by the suspects. The assailants deprived Pillay of his firearm and continued beating him, leaving him for dead before fleeing the scene,” said Naidoo.

He said it was believed that Pillay was struck multiple times.

“He was rushed to a medical facility with serious head injuries and was unresponsive. He remains in a critical condition. The incident has left Pillay's family devastated. He is widely known for his selfless contributions to crime prevention operations and his dedication to helping those in need.”

Colonel Robert Netshiunda, a provincial police spokesperson, said police in Phoenix are investigating a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

“When police arrived at the scene, they were shown blood stains and were informed that the victim was rushed to hospital. Investigations led to the arrest of two suspects, one of them an off-duty police officer.

“A third person was charged for failure to safeguard a firearm after his firearm was allegedly used to assault the victim. The suspects will appear in court today (Monday),” he said.
