rAge 2024, taking place from November 29 to December 1 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, Nasrec, celebrates local creativity and innovation with its much-loved Home_Coded initiative and Afro Geek’s Afro-Futuristic showcase.
A Planet of Unique Local Games
Among the stand-out titles is Sigma Studios’ Omen, a third-person horror game with a twist: players take on the role of a monster hunted by others. Set on an accursed island, the game plunges players into a gripping narrative of betrayal, loss, and supernatural forces.
Brandon Banks, lead developer at Sigma Studios, says: “Omen offers a unique third-person horror experience where you play as the monster, hunted by others. With dynamic AI, each encounter is unpredictable, making it a thrilling, replayable experience.”
Visitors to rAge can enjoy a preview of Omen, purchase limited-edition prequel comics, and get an exclusive game license for the full Omen experience.
Fans of quirky, light-hearted adventures can dive into MeowMeow Wizard Arena, an indie MMO set in a world of chonky feline creatures wearing silly costumes. Players can explore, battle monsters, and collect magical spells in a strange and whimsical universe.
Another highlight is Third Eye Games’ debut title, Mo ‘n Fro, a chaotic, two-player couch co-op that grew from a final-year student project into a fully realised game. Players must work together, using their abilities and the world’s mechanics to solve puzzles and complete challenges.
Co-founders Nhlanhla Langa and Luyolo Mbatha share: “We dreamed of attending rAge since high school but couldn’t afford it. Now, as part of the event, we’re excited to share Mo ‘n Fro and connect with visitors.”
Afro Geek’s Exploration of Afro-Futuristic Storytelling and Tech
Adding to the local flavour, Afro Geek will present a two-day programme celebrating Afro-futurism in storytelling and technology. The sessions explore everything from Zulu stick fighting in VR to gamifying African history.
