Renowned poet Ntsiki Mazwai has issued an apology following a brawl directed at Unathi Nkayi and Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie about a trip to the Havana International Book Fair in Cuba.

The controversy began when Mazwai took to social media to question the integrity of selections made for the literary event, revealing that she was initially invited before being abruptly removed from the list.

Mazwai accused McKenzie of corruption and favouritism, while also questioning Nkayi's qualifications as a writer and her ability to represent South Africa at the prestigious book fair.

Taking to X, she said, “I would like to sincerely apologise for my recent post. Upon further consideration, I realise that the comments made were not only inappropriate but may have caused unnecessary harm and confusion. While the intention was to express frustration, I understand that such statements can be misinterpreted or damaging, and for that, I apologise.

“I also recognise the need to be more thoughtful and responsible when discussing sensitive matters, especially when it involves public figures and important industry processes. Moving forward, I will ensure that my comments are more measured and respectful. Once again, I apologise for any offence caused and will work to be more mindful in the future. Thank you for your understanding. Miss Nontsikelelo Mazwai.”

Nkayi reacted to the apology and shared a fiery post on her social media platforms and said: “Call me a prostitute again, f**k, and find out."

As a result of the accusations made on social media, McKenzie has said he is taking a stance on the allegations.

“Ntsiki, you have made very serious allegations against me, very slanderous. I will take you to court. You will have a perfect opportunity to show the court of law all your evidence. You have gone very far this time. Please start by posting your invite from Cubans,” he said on Facebook.

In other posts, Ntsiki wrote, “Dear artists, your minister is threatening to use his power and money to sue me for asking why I was not allowed to go when Cuba asked for me by name. Gayton McKenzie is using intimidation tactics on me. I have not slandered him. I asked why I was removed.”
