Police in Mpumalanga are investigating an incident where two alleged suspects were fatally shot during a robbery incident that occurred at Tonga View on Sunday.
Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane said the incident happened at around 2am.
“According to a report, police attended a scene after receiving information about a shooting incident, and upon arrival, they found a man with some head injuries. The man related that he was walking alone in Tonga View when he was attacked by two males and got injured in the process,” said Ndubane.
According to the injured man, one of the assailants grabbed him from behind, while the other robber pointed at him with a firearm.
The victim told police that he fought back, then pulled out his licenced firearm.
“It was during this time when he reportedly shot the two alleged suspects. The two males sustained some gunshot wounds as a result and were later certified dead by the paramedics,” said Ndubane.
Some cartridges were found at the scene and were confiscated by police for further investigation.
“The man's firearm was seized also as part of the ongoing probe by the police,” she said.
Police said a replica firearm with some cartridges inside was found next to the two bodies of the deceased men.
“During the tour of the investigation, police confirmed that the firearm found with the man alleged to have been attacked, is registered under him,” said Ndubane.
“The man has been detained for now for further investigation and his firearm will undergo ballistic testing.”
Meanwhile, acting provincial commissioner of police in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi has ordered that a thorough investigation be carried out into the incident with the hope of ascertaining the facts around the incident.
