Mother shares pain of losing son after he collapsed while training for a hockey match

A GLENWOOD High School pupil, who collapsed and died at school, had big dreams of becoming a businessman and exploring the world "but he chose his wings".

Kaden Moodley, 15, a Grade 10 pupil, who collapsed on the school's sports field on Tuesday, was training for a hockey match that was scheduled for this weekend.

His distraught mother, Kammy Moodley, said his identical twin brother, Kellen, and older sister, Bree, had not attended school as they were not writing examinations yesterday. 

“However, because of the upcoming match, Kaden went to school so he could train. We were told he had asked to be substituted as he could not breathe. But before he could walk off the field, he collapsed.

"When we arrived at the school, the paramedics were trying to resuscitate him, but after 30 minutes, my son was gone. We are still waiting for the post-mortem results as to the cause of death. 

“We are shocked and devastated as he was a healthy young boy. He had no health conditions and was always active. He loved playing sports, cooking, baking, and dancing. He also loved cars. But most of all, he loved and lived for his family. Every day he would say how much he loved us, loved me. I don’t know how we are going to live without him,” she said. 

Moodley said Kaden had big dreams. 

“His dream was to study abroad and become a successful businessman in Dubai. He wanted to explore the world. He was a wonderful child, with a bubbly personality and he drew people to him. We should have been planning his future, but he chose his wings.”

She said the family were grateful for the support they have been receiving from his friends, the school and the community at large.

"The support has been phenomenal.”
