In a groundbreaking announcement on Friday morning, Mamelodi Sundowns unveiled a historic partnership with technology giant, Huawei, marking the club's inaugural mobile sponsorship. This collaboration aims not only to enhance the team's performance but also to transform the way fans engage with the game through innovative technology.
As the official mobile partner of Sundowns, Huawei is set to play a pivotal role in enhancing both on-pitch performance and off-pitch engagement. The partnership will leverage cutting-edge technologies, including advanced wearable gadgets for players as well as connectivity solutions to bring supporters closer to the action.
The club has not disclosed the financial worth of this collaboration nor its duration.
A statement from the club emphasised: “By leveraging Huawei’s technological expertise, Mamelodi Sundowns FC is poised to elevate their game, utilising advanced tools and analytics to maintain its competitive edge. This collaboration exemplifies a shared commitment to innovation, excellence, and the pursuit of greatness.”
Club chairperson Tlhopie Motsepe conveyed his enthusiasm, stating, “Great teams and great innovators thrive on pushing limits. We are thrilled to have Huawei partner with us in this journey of technology and sport, and we look forward to making a lasting impact together.”
IOL spoke to football fans to get their thoughts on the sponsorship.
Sipho "Sandawana" Mothibi, a staunch Downs fan, said: "Downs are bosses and a stylish brand, and while others have alcohol sponsorships, network and car sponsorships, Downs have gadgets and new and exciting things."
Nzuzo Mthembu said: "Growth is a good thing and such partnerships are growth. Hopefully this will encourage other teams to better their performances and get such deals.
"I mean, no business will want to invest their money in a failing cause, this is why some teams don't have sponsors and some may lose sponsorships if they continue what they are doing."
