In the heart of Moscow’s historic center, a young family recently made the decision to trade the serenity of the countryside for the dynamic urban pulse of the city. With this lifestyle shift came the challenge of designing an apartment that would balance both their active lifestyle and the need for warmth, comfort, and practicality.
Interior designer Julia Dzhanlatyan was brought in to create an environment that would cater to the family’s needs. "The goal was to design an interior that was not only functional and cozy but also expressive, balanced, and fitting for a couple with two young children," Dzhanlatyan shares. The family - who values travel, fine wine, and hosting intimate gatherings - required a home that reflected these passions while providing a haven of relaxation for everyday living.
Spanning 170 m², the apartment is meticulously planned to suit the family’s needs. The spacious entryway is bright and inviting, with a convenient guest bathroom just off the entrance. The central living area is designed as an open-plan space, where the living room, dining area, and kitchen flow seamlessly together yet are thoughtfully divided into functional zones.

To ensure the main space remains organized, the apartment features a secondary kitchen with all the necessary appliances, providing an ideal setup for meal preparation without disrupting the flow of the main living area.
Storage was also a key consideration in the design, with generous built-in storage and utility rooms to keep the home clutter-free. The private quarters include a serene master bedroom with a walk-in closet and en-suite bathroom, as well as two children’s bedrooms. A stylish home office adds to the space’s versatility, offering an inspiring environment for work.

The interior mood of the apartment embodies vibrant elegance, with a careful balance of colour and material choices. Dzhanlatyan’s design features warm pastel tones, complemented by deeper accents of emerald green, wine, and bold black details. Her approach reflects her unique design philosophy, which embraces a mix of cultures and eras, drawing inspiration from the natural harmony found in the dialogue between East and West.
"I don't like to stick strictly to one style," Dzhanlatyan explains. "Instead, I prefer to blend different visual metaphors, weaving together influences from various cultures into a cohesive, modern design." This approach gives the apartment a multifaceted character, offering both dynamic energy and a sense of tranquility.

One of the defining elements of the apartment’s design is its use of rich, natural materials. Marble, granite, quartzite, oak, and brass bring texture and warmth to the space, creating a tactile experience that adds depth and character. Dzhanlatyan’s commitment to bespoke design is evident in the custom-designed furniture, fittings, and lighting throughout the home. Notable pieces include a hallway mirror by designer Kiko Lopez and vintage pendant lights by Carlo Scarpa for Venini, which hang above the kitchen island, adding a touch of vintage sophistication.

The living and dining areas are separated from the home office by a partition made from wood and decorative glass, effectively delineating the spaces while still allowing natural light to pour through. The design of this partition introduces a visual rhythm that energizes both the study and the shared living spaces. A heavy curtain along the partition adds an extra layer of privacy when needed.
In the master bedroom, Dzhanlatyan drew on Eastern influences, designing a space that feels like a “treasure box” filled with intricate details. The headboard features a sisal screen depicting flying cranes, symbolizing love and fidelity, while the ceiling, adorned with platinum and gold gilding, serves as a striking focal point. Rich fabrics, deep colours, and intricate fringe details create a sense of comfort and tranquility in this personal retreat.

This project highlights Dzhanlatyan’s dedication to both functionality and visual storytelling. The home is designed to be practical for the family’s everyday needs, while also serving as a canvas for artistic expression. The result is a space that doesn’t just meet the family's needs - it enhances their lifestyle, offering a perfect balance of comfort, style, and functionality.
